The Impact From Ratcliffe, Manchester United, And The Immigration Comments

Sir Jim Ratcliffe should learn within the next several days whether the Football Association’s legal staff has determined that the Manchester United co-owner’s remarks on immigration last week, which drew criticism from the government and others, damaged the game’s reputation.

The governing body could decide that his comments were sufficiently offensive to warrant his being prosecuted for breaking its regulations, send the billionaire a letter reminding him of his obligations, or opt to do nothing. However, his assertion that the UK had been “colonized by immigrants,” citing false population statistics, could have long-term effects, regardless of what the FA decides to do.

Even though some people supported Ratcliffe for bringing up the immigration issue in his interview with Sky News, United’s decision to release an external statement that amounted to a public censure of their own co-owner was a reflection of their dismay at Old Trafford as well as their concern about the possible consequences of the backlash his remarks might cause.
