Daniel Noboa, president of Ecuador, has survived three claimed assassination attempts in the past month, the most recent of which reportedly featured gifts of chocolate and jam loaded with toxic chemicals. According to the president, the gifts had “very high concentrations” of three compounds, “and it was practically impossible for these to be present together at those levels” unless the gifts had been tampered with, he told CNN’s Fernando del Rincon on Thursday.
That occurred only a few weeks after Noboa was allegedly the target of another attempted murder when a group of people threw rocks at his car as he drove to a meeting in the province of Cañar. Ines Manzano, the energy minister, said that bullet marks were later discovered on the car, whereas Noboa claimed that days earlier, a different group had thrown homemade rockets and Molotov cocktails at his car.
The president told CNN that the threat was serious, despite the fact that some critics are dubious of the accusations due to a lack of publicly available evidence, arguing that they are instead intended to divert attention from the public’s mounting dissatisfaction and protests against Noboa’s government. “It was more than just stones and sticks. Molotov cocktails, homemade rockets, and weapons that might still kill you were all present. … they hurled rocks at the car’s hood and windshield from above,” Noboa alleged. “You would die if one of these homemade rockets struck you in the head or chest.”
