According to a significant UN study, the death penalty is being applied more frequently by the North Korean regime, even to those who are discovered watching and disseminating foreign films and TV dramas. According to the research, the dictatorship, which is still mainly isolated from the outside world, is also limiting the freedoms of its citizens and forcing them to work harder.
According to the UN Human Rights Office, the North Korean government has increased its control over “all aspects of citizens’ lives” throughout the last ten years. In the modern world, no other population is subject to such limitations,” it said, adding that technological advancements have contributed to the “increasing pervasiveness” of surveillance.
Since 2015, at least six new legislation that permit the imposition of the punishment have been introduced. As part of Kim Jong Un’s efforts to effectively restrict people’s access to information, viewing and disseminating foreign media content, including as movies and TV dramas, is now punishable by death.
According to escapees who spoke to UN researchers, more people were executed for disseminating foreign content starting in 2020. They explained how fire squads carry out these killings in public to terrorize people and deter them from disobeying the law.
