More than 160 million people across the United States are expected to be affected by a powerful winter storm beginning Friday, with heavy snowfall, freezing rain and dangerously low temperatures forecast.
The storm is set to move slowly east from the High Plains and Rocky Mountains, creating what the National Weather Service has described as extremely hazardous conditions. Arctic air will bring sub-zero temperatures and severe wind chills, raising serious risks of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed for long periods.
Travel disruption is expected throughout the weekend. Transportation authorities and major airports have warned of delays and cancellations, while airlines are allowing passengers to change travel plans in advance. Snow is forecast to blanket major cities including Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
Forecasters say heavy snow will stretch from the Southern Rockies and Plains through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Some areas from Colorado to West Virginia and up to Boston could see more than a foot of snow. Several US states have declared emergencies, and in Canada, freezing conditions are already taking hold, with more snow expected early next week.
