Ahead of Tuesday’s scheduled negotiations with Iran in Geneva, the US military is continuing to significantly increase its air and naval capabilities in the Middle East. According to several people familiar with the situation, the arrangements are being made to both threaten Tehran and provide possibilities for an internal attack in the event that talks over its nuclear program fall through. According to people familiar with the moves, US Air Force assets stationed in the UK, like as fighter jets and refuelling tankers, are being moved closer to the Middle East.
According to a US official, the US is also still sending air defence systems to the area, and a person familiar with the situation said that orders for a number of US military forces stationed there that were supposed to rotate out in the upcoming weeks have been extended. Flight-tracking data shows that in recent weeks, dozens of US military cargo aircraft have flown equipment from the US to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Jordan.
According to open-source air traffic communications, other fighter planes were also granted diplomatic permission to fly inside Jordanian airspace on Friday night. Twelve US F-15 attack planes have been stationed at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base since January 25, according to satellite photos.
