A US Navy spokesman stated that an Iranian drone was shot down on Tuesday as it aggressively approached an American aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea. According to US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins, an F-35C stealth fighter jet that took out from the USS Abraham Lincoln warship fired down the drone “in self-defence” to protect the aircraft carrier and its crew.
The drone approached the ship from approximately 500 miles off the Iranian coast, but it wasn’t clear what it wanted. No US equipment was broken, and no military members were hurt. It comes as the US continues to send more troops to the area, where tensions are high between Washington and Tehran.
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has said that if Iran doesn’t agree to limit its nuclear program, he will use military force against it. He had already talked of becoming involved during Tehran’s deadly crackdown on protests against the government.
After the Iranian drone was shot down, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that talks between the US and Iran are still planned for later this week. She stated that Trump “is still committed to always pursuing diplomacy first,” but she also noted that “he always has a range of options on the table, including the use of military force.
