The White House has revealed that US President Donald Trump and his officials are “actively” exploring a possible deal to purchase the Danish territory of Greenland. According to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, it is “something that’s currently being actively discussed by the president and his national security team” on Wednesday.
Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly emphasized that the island is not for sale. Leavitt responded that all options were available but that Trump’s “first option always has been diplomacy” when asked why the Trump administration had earlier said it was not ruling out using military action to acquire Greenland.
Following Trump’s unilateral use of military force against Venezuela on Saturday to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro, worries for the territory’s future reappeared. Another NATO ally, Denmark, claims that an assault on its territory would put an end to the military alliance. Greenland is essential to US security, according to the Trump administration.
Its location between North America and the Arctic puts it in a strong position for early-warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring vessels in the area, despite being the most sparsely populated region.
