Tens of thousands of people protested in Morocco’s capital on Sunday against the ongoing bloodshed in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has restarted its anti-Hamas offensive following a two-month ceasefire. The Justice and Development party, an Islamist-dominated coalition, organised the largest pro-Palestinian protest in Rabat in several months.
Children carried white shrouds painted red to commemorate the thousands of young kids killed in Palestinian land over a year and a half of conflict. The Israeli military launched its offensive in Gaza on March 18, and more than 1,330 people have been murdered since then, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants attacked villages in southern Israel, killing 1,218 people, most of whom were civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli numbers.
According to the Gaza health ministry, the total number of people killed since the conflict began is currently 50,695. On Sunday, marchers yelled slogans such as “The people want the liberation of Palestine!”, referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a criminal, and demanded an end to Gaza’s isolation and access to humanitarian relief.
There were also calls to end Morocco’s relations with Israel, which were re-established in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, with demonstrators labelling such connections as “treason.” Rabat has officially called for an end to the war in Gaza, making no mention of its relationship with Israel.
