As your first day of work draws near, anxiousness sets in. You consider leaving a favourable first impression on your new coworkers is crucial. You’re practising your introduction already. You want to establish your authority, competency, and well-defined boundaries. You should also ensure that your new boss approves of you.  Your heart rate increases, and your hands sweat as you consider all this. You haven’t even started your new work yet, but anxiety has already set in. Even while some anxiety is unavoidable, it doesn’t have to last. A better, less stressful transition will result from understanding new job anxiety and how to manage it.

What Is New Job Anxiety?

Job anxiety, sometimes known as the jitters, can affect anyone anytime. Adjusting to new work is a prime moment for anxiety to strike because anxiety happens when we experience change or new surroundings. Starting a new job can make a lot of people anxious. You must get used to travelling to a new workplace, a new office, and new management. Even if everything is new, you are still getting used to it. You might be making a substantial professional move now and worried about failing. Or perhaps you’re concerned that burnout will occur at your new job and toxic leadership is just around the corner.

People sometimes question how long new job anxiety lasts, and the truth is that it really depends on the person. Some people only experience it during the first week of onboarding. Others experience anxiety for several weeks, which might result in imposter syndrome or make you doubt your abilities. 

Tips To Overcome New Job Anxiety 

Practice Self Validation 

Reflect on why you were employed before your first day; after all, you were probably chosen over others, so determine why YOU. Pick one quality or strength that makes you a good fit for this position.

As you get started, pay attention to any unavoidable new-job nervousness you may be feeling and take a moment to breathe. Reset by taking a slow, deep breath and reminding yourself of this quality. Trying out some mindfulness techniques is one of the best things you can do when feeling particularly apprehensive about starting a new job. though it might not necessarily help your anxiety, doing so can minimise the symptoms and inspire you to consider the root of the problem and come up with a workable solution.

The goal of mindfulness is to provide you with more clarity while allowing you to relax and decompress. Mindfulness practices allow you to focus on the here and now rather than worrying about the future. This will enable you to identify your worries, come to terms with them, and let them go.

Talk To Someone 

Ask for support from a friend by talking to them. Anxiety is greatly fueled by doubt. Consider your qualifications and reassure yourself that you are qualified for the position. Call a close friend or relative and ask them to tell you all the beautiful things about you and how you are more than qualified for the job if you find it challenging to be kind to yourself.

Preparation Helps 

Prepare everything the previous evening. First-day jitters can always be reduced by preparation. You should prepare everything the night before to avoid being surprised and concerned in the morning. Do a practice run the day before, just around the time you are scheduled to begin; by reducing all the potential problems, you will feel much more at ease.


Determine the practical details in advance and before your first day at work. Prepare. Drive the same route to your new workplace so you are familiar with it and can estimate the time it will take to arrive. Learn where you will park and where to check in on your first morning, if possible. When you first arrive, find out where to go and who to check in with. Being organised will help you feel more at ease on your first day.

Engage Your New Friends

“Keep in mind that everyone has a beginning. Your boss or somebody with more experience than you might terrify you. Try to speak with them whenever you can to see what you can learn from them. You might learn that when they first started working, they experienced comparable emotions. Participate in group activities with your classmates so they can help and encourage you.

Be Specific About Your New Role

The following actions can be beneficial in lowering your anxiety and stress as they give you more specifications of your new role:

  • Ask your boss for clarification (and be aware of your responsibilities!).
  • Be kind to yourself because mastering a new job requires patience because nobody is an expert at their job right away.
  • Make an action plan for how you will organise your work so that you know what has to be done and have the necessary resources.

Be persistent

Adopt a step-by-step approach. Your first few days on the job will likely be busy. You will discover that things are easier to manage as you adapt to the routine. Maintain a cheerful attitude and resist the urge to think negatively. Instead, emphasise the positives and consider the advantages of a job. The most important thing is to keep going. Keep your aims and ambitions in sight. Take baby steps to reach your objectives.

New job anxiety happens to almost everyone.  Getting to know the role and picking up new procedures and systems are the main goals of the first few days of new employment. That you can’t immediately know everything is understandable. When you don’t understand something, try to be understanding and ask for clarification. To get up to speed quickly, it is far preferable to ask coworkers and superiors for assistance in the initial few days.
