Due to pressure from automakers, plans to outlaw the sale of new combustion engine vehicles in the EU by 2035 have been thrown into disarray. The European Commission suggested on Tuesday that the 2023-approved ban be reduced from 100% of vehicles to only 90%. This implies that internal combustion engines or plug-in hybrids may still account for 10% of all new automobiles produced after 2035.
Although the president of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that Europe is still “at the forefront of the global clean transition,” the action, which was announced by the EU’s executive arm together with other steps to boost the bloc’s automobile industry, signals a setback for combating climate change.
European politicians are expected to adopt the idea. Manfred Weber, the president of the EPP, the largest party in the European Parliament, reportedly stated that the EU intended to repeal the prohibition and expressed support for the new plan prior to the announcement, according to Reuters. The European Commission will present a clear proposal to lift the ban on combustion engines. He claimed that it was a grave error in industrial policy.
