Due to its capacity to create sexually explicit deepfakes, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok has been restricted in Malaysia and Indonesia. Grok is a tool on Musk’s X platform that lets users create images, but it has recently been used to alter photos of actual individuals to present them in skimpy attire.
According to the South East Asian nations, Grok could be used to create non-consensual and pornographic photographs of women and children. They have banned the AI tool before anyone else in the world.
Additionally, there is increasing pressure in the UK to block Grok; the country’s technology secretary has stated that she would support the action, which has led Musk to accuse the government of attempting to stifle free expression.
Over the weekend, separate declarations from the communications ministries of Malaysia and Indonesia announced their actions against Grok. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said on Sunday that after discovering “repeated misuse” of Grok to produce dangerous content, it sent notifications to X earlier this year requesting stricter precautions.
However, the regulator claimed that X’s reaction mostly concentrated on the user reporting mechanism and neglected to address the fundamental hazards of its platform’s design.
