Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has called European leaders “weak” and proposed that the United States reduce its assistance to Ukraine. He accused “decaying” European nations of allowing Kyiv to fight “until they drop” and said they had failed to manage migration or take strong steps to halt Ukraine’s war with Russia in an extensive interview with Politico.
European leaders have tried to play a part in the US-led efforts to end the conflict, but they fear that doing so will compromise the continent’s long-term interests in favor of a speedy conclusion. Citing the UK’s involvement in sanctions and support for the peace process, Downing Street denied Trump’s assertion that Europe had done nothing.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was under increasing pressure from Trump to “play ball” by ceding territory to Moscow to reach an agreement to end the conflict. In February 2022, Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine is getting ready to submit a fresh peace plan to the White House, and Zelensky has ruled out ceding land.
Later on Tuesday, Zelensky wrote on X that Ukraine and Europe were actively working on “all components of potential steps toward ending the war” and that Kyiv was prepared to deliver the plan’s European and Ukrainian components to “our partners in the US” because they were now more developed.
