US troops will be sent to Portland, Oregon, per President Donald Trump’s directive, which permits the use of “full force” if necessary to quell demonstrations against immigration detention facilities. Trump stated that he was “directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland” .
Adding on Truth Social, he stated that the action will assist in shielding “any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists,” and that “I am also authorising Full Force, if necessary. Democratic lawmakers criticized the announcement, arguing that the city did not require the deployment of federal troops.
In the midst of a broader Trump administration campaign on illegal immigration, Saturday’s declaration signifies the further expansion of troop deployment in American cities. Whether Trump plans to activate the regular US military or the national guard is not made clear in his post. Additionally, the post did not define what “full force” meant.
Sean Parnell, the chief Pentagon spokesman, told the BBC, “We stand ready to mobilize U.S. military personnel in support of DHS operations in Portland at the President’s direction.” “The Department will provide information and updates as they become available.
