Concerns about Netflix’s proposed $72 billion (£54 billion) acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery’s film studio and well-known HBO streaming networks have been raised by US President Donald Trump.
He stated that Netflix has a “big market share” and that the companies’ combined scale “could be a problem” at a Sunday event in Washington, DC. The two businesses announced on Friday that they had come to a deal to create a new media behemoth by bringing Warner Brothers’ properties, such as Game of Thrones and Harry Potter, to Netflix.
Competition authorities have not yet approved the proposed deal, which has alarmed some in the business. Warner Bros., Netflix, and the White House have all been contacted by the BBC for comment.
Netflix began as a DVD-by-mail rental service in 1997 and has since expanded into the world’s largest subscription streaming service. The contract would solidify its top spot and is the largest the film business has seen in a long time.
As per the arrangement, many international entertainment franchises, including Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Looney Tunes, would be transferred to Netflix. After Warner Bros. divides its operations in the second half of 2026, the deal is anticipated to be finalized.
