Donald Trump announced plans to impose a fresh 10% tariff on Chinese imports, the latest salvo in the US president’s intensifying trade war. Imports from China are already subject to at least 10% of the border tariffs due to a Trump tariff order imposed earlier this month.
Trump also stated on Thursday that he intends to proceed with the planned 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, which are scheduled to take effect on March 4. His remarks came as Mexican and Canadian officials met in Washington to seek ways to avert the plan.
Trump had declared plans to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on February 4 unless the two countries strengthened border security. He postponed the measures for a month at the last minute after the two countries agreed to bolster border funds and discuss ways to combat drug trafficking.
On Thursday, Trump stated on social media that he believed little action had been taken to stem the influx of fentanyl into the United States. Medicines continue to stream into our country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels,” he stated, adding that “a major part” of the medicines were manufactured in China.
