Trump Claims US air Defence Systems Would be Sent to Ukraine

According to US President Donald Trump, he would use NATO to provide armaments, notably Patriot air defence systems, to Ukraine. Trump stated on NBC News that “we’re going to be sending Patriots to Nato, and then Nato will distribute that” as part of a new agreement, with NATO covering the cost of the weaponry.

Following remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about holding a “positive dialogue” with Trump over timely delivery of armaments, he made his declaration. He said that following a spike in Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities over the last week, he had requested ten Patriot systems. Patriot batteries are considered to be among the greatest air defence systems in the world since they can detect and intercept approaching missiles.

Speaking Thursday in Rome, the Ukrainian leader stated that other European allies were willing to assist and that Germany was willing to pay for two Patriots and Norway for one.

Trump claimed he was “not happy” that no progress had been achieved to stop the war during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. He has subsequently complained that Putin’s “very nice” demeanour was ineffective. Trump promised to make a “major statement” on Russia on Monday in an interview with NBC News, but he did not specify what the message would be about.
