In a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Friday, Azerbaijan and Armenia inked a peace deal mediated by the US that would strengthen economic links between the two countries following decades of strife and advance them toward complete normalization.
Moscow, which views the region as falling under its sphere of influence, is sure to be alarmed by the agreement between the competing South Caucasus states, providing it is upheld. According to Trump, the two nations agreed to put an end to hostilities, establish diplomatic ties, and respect one another’s territorial integrity.
It’s been 35 years since they battled, but now they’re friends and will remain so for a very long time.” Speaking at a White House signing event, Trump was accompanied by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Since the mountainous Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is primarily inhabited by ethnic Armenians, broke away from Azerbaijan with Armenia’s help in the late 1980s, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have existed. In 2023, Azerbaijan regained complete control of the area, forcing nearly all of the 100,000 ethnic Armenians living there to migrate to Armenia.
