Trump Expresses Doubt About Possibility of US Going to War with Venezuela

Donald Trump has downplayed the idea of a US-Venezuela war, but has hinted that Nicolás Maduro’s tenure as president is coming to an end. When asked if the US would go to war with Venezuela, the president told CBS’ 60 Minutes, “I doubt it.” I do not think so. But they’ve been treating us horribly.

His remarks come as the United States continues to launch strikes on alleged drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean. The Trump administration claims the strikes are vital to stop the flow of drugs into the United States.

Trump denied that the US action was aimed at toppling Maduro, a long-time Trump opponent, and instead said it was about “many things. CBS News, the BBC’s US news partner, claimed that at least 64 people had been killed in US strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific since early September.

Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump stated: “Every single boat that you see that’s shot down kills 25,000 people on drugs and destroys families all over our country.”

When asked if the US planned any ground strikes, Trump declined to rule them out, stating, “I wouldn’t be inclined to say that… I’m not going to tell you what I’m going to do with Venezuela, whether I’ll do it or not.
