This president will get what he asks for. Less than a week after Donald Trump specifically called for the prosecution of a few of his detractors in a Truth Social post, former FBI director James Comey has been indicted. Late Thursday saw the Department of Justice announce a criminal case against Mr. Comey, satisfying the president’s desire for vengeance and adding to worries about whether US Attorney General Pam Bondi is using the Justice Department as a weapon against Trump’s political opponents.
In connection with his 2020 Senate panel hearing, Mr. Comey was charged with obstruction of justice and making false statements. He allegedly misled Congress about whether he approved of the media’s access to classified material, according to the prosecution.
Even if Trump’s Justice Department maintains that there is a strong case against the former FBI director and that this is an instance of the powerful being held accountable, it doesn’t take much to make the connections. “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people,” Bondi wrote on X as the indictment became public.
