Following the release of an anti-tariff commercial featuring former President Ronald Reagan by the province of Ontario, US President Donald Trump announced he would raise duties on products imported from Canada. Trump blasted Canadian officials for not removing the advertisement before the World Series baseball victory and called it a “fraud” in a social media post on Saturday.
He added, “I am raising the tariff on Canada by 10% above what they are currently paying because of their hostile act and grave misrepresentation of the facts. The premier of Ontario declared he will remove the advertisement after Trump withdrew from trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Friday that he would halt his province’s anti-tariff advertising campaign in the United States. He told reporters that he took the decision “so that trade talks can resume” following talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Additionally, he stated that it would continue to run over the weekend, including during World Series games between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since Trump started attempting to impose high tariffs on goods from important trading partners, Canada is the only G7 nation that has failed to strike an agreement with the US.
