It appears like Donald Trump has come out on top in the greatest crisis in America’s relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The US pounded Tehran’s nuclear installations on Monday, and the president jumped on Tehran’s mild missile retaliation as an indication that it wants to stop the escalation. “WORLD, CONGRATS! IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!” was shared on Truth Social.
Trump’s exuberance was a sign that he sees the US involvement in the conflict as over, at least for now. He then announced that a truce between Israel and Iran will take effect later on Tuesday. As seen by strikes by both Israel and Iran in the hours before the truce’s scheduled establishment, ceasefires in the Middle East are frequently brittle and short-lived.
The truce, in my opinion, is indefinite. Trump stated on Monday night on NBC News that Israel and Iran will never “be shooting at each other again,” saying, “It’s going to go forever.
Considering that the Middle East is known as a cemetery of American presidents, that is a daring assertion. Events will determine if Trump’s breakthrough is genuine or only a mirage, regardless of his marketing prowess.
Has the US, as Trump asserted, indeed made sure that Iran’s nuclear program, which poses an existential danger to Israel, is “obliterated”? Or is it all a typical Trump illusion, and does a more serious crisis appear to be on the horizon, given the conflict’s obviously unresolved issues, including a seemingly missing stockpile of highly enriched uranium that could be easily turned into a bomb?
