Hours after meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump told US broadcaster Fox News on Tuesday, “You have my assurance and I’m President.” There will be security of some sort. NATO cannot be involved. However, no boots will be on the ground. The question of sending US or European soldiers was not brought up at the Washington meetings, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. ”
Trump’s remarks came after Zelenskyy and European allies met at a high level in Washington on August 18 to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. Following the meeting, Trump said on Truth Social that he had also discussed plans for a possible meeting between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “A very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years,” he said, the negotiations represented.
