US President Donald Trump has warned that Canada could face a 100 percent tariff on all its goods if the country moves forward with a trade agreement with China. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday, Trump said that any such deal would result in immediate trade penalties on Canadian products entering the United States.
Relations between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have become strained in recent days, following Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticized the influence of major global powers. Carney also recently met Chinese President Xi Jinping and announced a trade agreement covering sectors including electric vehicles. It remains unclear whether the agreement has taken effect or if Trump was referring directly to it. The BBC has contacted the White House and Canadian officials for comment.
In his post, Trump referred to Carney as “Governor Carney” and accused Canada of potentially acting as a transit point for Chinese goods entering the US. He did not provide further details or a timeline for the proposed tariff.
Trump has previously described Canada as the “51st state” and suggested closer US control, remarks that have drawn criticism. Although ties between the two countries had shown signs of improvement, recent US positions on Greenland and Nato have renewed tensions with Canada and European allies.
