US President Donald Trump has called on Republican lawmakers to support the release of government files related to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a post on Sunday night, Trump urged members of his party in the House of Representatives to vote in favor of the measure, stating that “we have nothing to hide.”
The appeal marks a shift from his earlier stance and comes as House Democrats continue to release documents connected to Epstein, some of which mention Trump. The former president has repeatedly denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.
Growing speculation surrounding Epstein’s past links to influential figures has sparked renewed political tension, including a public dispute between Trump and one of his long-time allies. Reports suggest that dozens of Republican lawmakers are now prepared to defy party leadership and back a bill that would require the US government to make all Epstein-related documents and investigation files public.
Supporters believe the proposal has enough votes to pass in the House later this week, though its fate in the Senate remains uncertain. Epstein was found dead in a New York prison cell in 2019, in what the coroner ruled a suicide. He had been awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking, following a previous conviction in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
