Trump will Restructure the H-1B Visa Program and Increase the Application Fee by $100,000

According to a White House official, US President Donald Trump intends to implement a new $100,000 application cost for H-1B worker visas in an attempt to decrease their use as part of his larger immigration crackdown.

The insider told Bloomberg that the Republican president was set to sign a proclamation as early as Friday that would limit admission under the H-1B visa program unless the application fee is paid. According to the official, Trump also intended to restrict their usage by enacting modifications to the H-1B program’s prevailing salary levels. For technology and staffing organizations that depend on foreign workers to cover a range of technical positions, the H-1B program has become essential.

According to US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Amazon had more than 10,000 H-1B visas authorized in 2025, compared to more than 5,000 for Microsoft and Meta Platforms.

On Friday, shares of Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp., an IT services provider that heavily depends on H-1B visa holders, dropped more than 5%. According to federal data, India accounted for 71% of all H-1B visas granted last year, making it the top recipient. China came in second at 11.7%.

People working in specialized occupations, often in the technology sector, are eligible for the H-1B visa program. Software developers, tech program managers, and other IT specialists may be among them. The authorized duration of H-1B visas is three to six years.
