Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, which he will give on Tuesday night, has more stakes in its outcome than most of his congressional remarks. Trump has expanded the scope of presidential authority in a number of ways during the past 12 months. He has made significant progress in both foreign and domestic affairs. However, not all of his accomplishments have been well received; in fact, some have caused great division.
Trump will speak to an America that is very different from the one he returned to lead last year, regardless of how his policies have been received. He has accelerated the implementation of his expansive second-term agenda, which includes redefining the role of the presidency, upending foreign alliances, cracking down on illegal immigration and successfully sealing the border, and challenging the checks and balances that form the cornerstone of the American political system.
However, he has encountered major challenges that have limited his goals, both from the general people and important organizations. Voters will evaluate Trump’s second term as president in November when the midterm elections are held in a little more than eight months. They could either give the Democrats control of Congress or maintain his Republican majority, guaranteeing two years of intense oversight and legislative deadlock that might, in his own words, result in his impeachment once more.
