Following allegations that President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to attack drug gangs in Latin America, Mexico said that the US military would not be invading its country.
“The United States is not going to come to Mexico with the military,” stated President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday. “We work together and cooperate, but an invasion is not imminent. That is completely and utterly excluded.
On Friday, the New York Times revealed that Trump had covertly signed an order authorizing the use of military action abroad. The White House stated that Trump’s “top priority is protecting the homeland” in a statement to the BBC, but it made no mention of the memo.
Sheinbaum told reporters “that it had nothing to do with the participation of any military personnel” and that the Mexican government was notified that an order on the cartels was imminent.
“By no means is it a part of any arrangement. “We have always said ‘No’ when it has been brought up,” she stated. Trump’s designation of cartels as terrorists “cannot be an opportunity for the US to invade our sovereignty,” Sheinbaum told reporters earlier this year.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday that the designation will assist the United States in targeting cartels, especially through the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies.
