The gap between US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the US will “run” Venezuela and the reality of an ongoing dictatorship on the ground is widening four days after his most aggressive military action to date.
The White House runs the risk of a potential strategic defeat snatched from the jaws of a stunning but fleeting victory in the coming weeks if it fails to follow through on its harsh display of US strength in the early hours of Saturday.
During the press conference on Saturday, Trump’s display of American power abruptly changed from claiming US control over Caracas to acknowledging that this was made possible by the alleged cooperation of Nicolás Maduro’s longtime deputy, Delcy Rodriguez, who has since been sworn in as acting president.
Currently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s sporadic phone calls, supported by the massive power of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and other Navy assets, seem to constitute the mechanism of American influence, at least in public. Although the initial military attack was shocking, the “takeover” has thus far been an anticlimax that depends on Rodriguez accepting the role of colonialist puppet and overnight quisling. On Sunday, she hinted that “cooperation” with the US would come after publicly demanding Maduro’s release and expressing outrage.
