The first round of trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States has ended without any visible breakthrough, coming amid renewed Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory.
The two days of discussions in Abu Dhabi concluded as Russian strikes overnight into Saturday killed one person and injured at least 35 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a second round of talks could take place as early as next week, a timeline later confirmed by a US official who said negotiations would resume on Sunday.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned the latest attacks, describing them as brutal and deliberately ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said the strikes had affected not only civilians but also the atmosphere of the negotiations.
The Abu Dhabi meeting marked the first three way talks between the parties since Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to Zelensky, the main focus of the discussions was outlining possible parameters for ending the war. He emphasised the importance of US monitoring and oversight in any future peace process to ensure lasting security.
