According to the Greek coast guard, twenty-two migrants perished off the coast of Greece after spending six days in a dinghy headed for Europe. A European border agency warship rescued 26 survivors on Friday, including a lady and a kid. On the island of Crete, two of them were transported to a hospital in Heraklion.
According to a coastguard spokesperson cited by news agency AFP, the migrant boat departed the port of Tobruk in eastern Libya on March 21. According to the coast guard, the deaths were caused by bad weather as well as a shortage of food and water. Many illegal migrants arrive in Greece and Italy through the Mediterranean, frequently from neighboring Turkey and northern Africa.
Since there is a lower chance of inclement weather in the summer, many of these crossings take place then. The Greek coast guard reported that the dinghy’s passengers lost their bearings during the voyage and spent six days at sea without food or drink. Eventually, the vessel was stopped 53 nautical miles from the southern coastal city of Ierapetra.
