An internal US government review revealed no proof of widespread theft of US-funded humanitarian goods by the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, calling into question Israel and the US’s principal justification for supporting a new armed private relief operation.
The analysis, which had not previously been revealed, was carried out by a bureau under the US Agency for International Development and finished in late June. It looked into 156 incidences of theft or loss of US-funded commodities reported by US relief groups between October 2023 and May of this year. According to a PowerPoint presentation of the findings, there are “no reports alleging Hamas” profited from US-funded goods.
According to the UN World Food Programme, about a quarter of Gaza’s 2.1 million Palestinians are experiencing famine-like circumstances, many are suffering from acute malnutrition, and the World Health Organization and medics in the enclave are reporting starving deaths among children and others.
The report was conducted by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), which had been the major sponsor of assistance to Gaza before the Trump administration halted all US foreign funding in January, resulting in the termination of hundreds of projects. It has also began dismantling USAID, whose operations have been absorbed by the State Department.
