You may soon be able to pay for your purchases by simply hovering your palm in front of machines in stores throughout the UAE. This means no more swiping your bank cards or phones at cash registers after shopping.
“The Palm Pay technology will be gradually implemented throughout 2024,” Abdallah Abu Sheikh, founder of the technology development group Astra Tech, told Khaleej Times.
The company’s fintech subsidiary, PayBy, introduced the payment solution at the Dubai Fintech Summit.
Palm Pay is a contactless palm recognition service that accepts payments through biometric authentication methods. Payment machines authenticate transactions using customers’ palm prints.
“We currently have a set number of machines that will be used for testing within the local market infrastructure. “(This will) ensure complete readiness for scaling to over 50,000 PayBy merchants all through the year,” Sheikh explained. “We’re ironing out the final details to ensure Palm Pay launches seamlessly this year.
The technology will be provided free of charge to users.”In the first phase, users can register at the point of sale using the device itself. In the future, the palm authentication process will be integrated into apps (such as PayBy and Botim) to allow customers to easily update their accounts using their palm prints via an authentication feature on their phone, similar to how the facial recognition authentication process currently works.
