As diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continue, Ukraine’s security chief says he hopes to arrange President Volodymyr Zelensky’s travel to the US “at the earliest suitable date” this month.
The president of Ukraine’s security council, Rustem Umerov, announced on Tuesday that the US and Ukraine had come to “a common understanding on the key terms of the agreement discussed” at earlier Geneva negotiations.
Regarding the possibility of Trump-Zelensky negotiations, the White House has remained silent. Dan Driscoll, the Secretary of the US Army, has been in Abu Dhabi talking with Russian officials. The Russian delegation’s membership is unknown.
According to Umerov, his group “look forward” to setting up Zelensky’s return to the US “at the earliest suitable date in November to complete final steps and make a deal” with US President Donald Trump. Earlier, a US official accompanying Driscoll in Abu Dhabi said reporters that Ukraine had accepted the peace agreement, with a few details still to be worked out.
When the BBC asked the administration to clarify this, the administration cited remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday in Geneva, where he stated that higher-level talks would still be required to complete the deal.
