This week, all eyes are on Russia as negotiations for a peace deal to end the conflict in Ukraine move to Moscow and intensify. America. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Russia on Monday and is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a U.S.-backed 19-point peace plan. It is now up to Russia to decide whether to cooperate with the framework deal after Ukraine tentatively endorsed the nascent peace plans.
Following a frenzy of diplomacy and conversations between U.S. and Ukrainian officials over the past week, with talks scheduled for Sunday in Florida, Russia will be keen to offer its opinion on the revised ideas.
It’s unclear, though, whether Putin will cooperate on a fresh peace proposal, since Russia believes it has the upper hand on the battlefield and U.S. President Donald Trump’s ear when it comes to the details of a potential peace agreement.
Thus far, Putin and Kremlin officials have responded warily to the revised peace plan, indicating that while Russia is willing to engage in dialogue, the conflict in Ukraine may not end anytime soon.
In general, we agree that this might be the basis for future agreements,” Putin said during a trip to Kyrgyzstan. He continued by saying that Moscow was prepared for “serious discussions” with Witkoff and that the United States seemed to be taking Russia’s stance on a peace agreement into account.
