Was Pope Francis Truly so Forward-Thinking?

Pope Francis dedicated his papacy to helping the most vulnerable, including the poor, migrants, and the environment. Was he truly so forward-thinking, though? On July 8, 2013, the Argentine pope, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, made his first trip to the Italian island of Lampedusa. He honoured the refugees who had perished in the Mediterranean at that time and condemned “the globalisation of indifference” to their plight.

Evin Incir, a Swedish Social Democrat MEP (S&D), told Euronews, “He was a man of peace, a man for human dignity, and he always spoke out when people were mistreated and when migrants were scapegoated and demonised by forces that are no less present in this parliament.

The head of the Church, who was very concerned in economic matters, also criticised “the new idolatry of money,” “the excesses of globalisation,” and “finance that tramples people underfoot.” His 2015 encyclical letter, Laudato Si’, was dedicated to ecology, which was central to his pontificate. During his pontificate, women’s sexual and reproductive rights have been mostly ignored. The Pope linked abortion to homicide and called abortionists “hired killers” while in Belgium.
