What Keeps Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Awake at Night? Misuse of AI, Not Terminators

When it comes to the future of artificial intelligence, you don’t need to worry about killer robots—at least not according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. What should concern you more is how people might use AI to cause harm.

In a podcast with Theo Von, Altman was asked what scares him most about AI. His answer? “I worry more about people using AI to do bad things than the AI deciding to do bad things on its own.

According to Altman, the incentives of individuals who operate the machines—rather than the devices themselves—are the issue. “The risk is if someone has a very powerful tool and truly wants to cause harm,” he clarified.

This human-centred apprehension contrasts with more dystopian stories frequently linked to artificial intelligence. Altman believes that intentional misuse poses a greater hazard than rogue systems deviating from the plan, especially when powerful tools are readily available.

He also discussed the difficult task of incorporating security measures into OpenAI’s products. “We’re working to erect barriers along the way. It’s challenging, but essential,” Altman remarked.
