At a parade on Monday that drew hundreds of thousands of people, a motorist in England crashed a car into a group of pedestrians who were celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League triumph.
What Happened
Merseyside Police responded around 6 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports that a car had driven into a crowd during a parade. Footage shared on social media captured a dark-colored car with a shattered rear window swerving into parade-goers, knocking people to the ground. Some were seen trying to help victims, including individuals trapped beneath the vehicle. Bystanders also attempted to stop the driver, with one person opening the car door briefly before the man inside slammed it shut and drove forward again into the crowd.
Police Response
At a press conference Monday night, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the event appeared to be an isolated incident and was not being treated as an act of terrorism. She confirmed that no additional suspects were being sought.
The Suspect
A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene. Authorities believe he was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the crash.
The Injured
According to the ambulance service, at least 47 people were injured, including four children. Of those, 27 were transported to hospitals, and two one of them a child suffered serious injuries.
