After the US Supreme Court said that many of the tariffs that President Donald Trump proposed in 2025 are illegal, key US trading partners in Asia are facing a new wave of uncertainty.
Trump stated on Friday, after the Supreme Court’s decision, that he will slap additional global tariffs of 15% on goods coming into the US. On Monday, US customs said it will stop collecting tariffs related to the trademark trade policy that Trump exploited to start a worldwide trade war.
Governments from India to Indonesia have been working for months to reach trade agreements with Washington. This is a big blow to them. Many people had promised to put billions of dollars into the US.
Analysts told the BBC that the new tariff rate seemed like a gain for many Asian countries who had been hammered with higher taxes before, but there are still a lot of unknowns.”Even if countries do decide to negotiate, the current US government is still going to try to raise tariffs, no matter what measures have been struck down,” said Adam Samdin from Oxford Economics.
