When The Mayor of Washington, DC, Resists Trump’s “Authoritarian Push,” National Guard Troops Arrive

President Donald Trump said violent crime was out of control, so he ordered the US National Guard to take over the city’s police department. A day later, the troops started to show up on the streets of Washington, DC. On Tuesday night, armored cars were seen at tourist attractions and urban areas around the US capital. According to officials, 500 federal law enforcement officers and 800 National Guard soldiers are anticipated to be sent in.

The army deployment was characterized as a “authoritarian push” by Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, DC, who has claimed that crime is out of control in her city. Trump, a Republican, has also threatened similar deployments against other Democratic-controlled cities, including Chicago and New York. He has claimed that crime is increasing in places, including Washington, DC, while a BBC Verify investigation points to a different pattern in DC.

According to data released by the Metropolitan Police (MPDC) in Washington, DC, violent offenses decreased after reaching a high in 2023 and reached their lowest level in 30 years in 2024. Preliminary data for 2025 shows that they are still falling. According to the MPDC, robberies are down 28% and violent crime is down 26% overall this year compared to the same period in 2024.
