The World Health Organisation declared on Tuesday that the Mpox outbreak is not another Covid-19 because there is already a lot of knowledge available about the virus and ways to contain it.
The WHO’s European director Hans Kluge stated that although further study is required on the Clade 1b strain, which led the UN agency to declare an international health emergency, the spread of Mpox can be stopped. He declared, “Mpox is not the new Covid.”
We are able to manage Mpox. And the actions required in the European region to completely stop its transmission’, he said via video link during a media briefing in Geneva.
Due to a global outbreak of the milder Clade 2b strain of mpox, which primarily affects men who have sex with men, the WHO declared an emergency in July 2022. In May 2023, the alarm was turned off. According to Kluge, we were able to control pox in Europe because we worked directly with the most impacted communities.
He said that effective case contacts investigation, vaccination, behaviour modifications in the impacted communities, and rigorous surveillance all helped to contain the outbreak.
