Why the Comey and James Cases Vary from the Bolton Indictment

One of President Donald Trump’s most well-known enemies, whom Trump has accused of crimes and urged should be prosecuted, has been indicted by the Justice Department for the third time in three weeks.

Along with former FBI director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, John Bolton, who was Trump’s national security adviser during his first term before defecting, is also facing charges.

Bolton is accused of 18 counts of transmitting and keeping sensitive material from his tenure in the White House under Trump. He allegedly gave family members without security clearances access to the information.

Because of its quick development, Bolton’s indictment will frequently be grouped alongside Comey’s and James’s as an illustration of how Trump uses the legal system as a weapon against his opponents. Given that it has no precedent in American politics spanning decades, Trump’s involvement in planning the accusations against Comey and James has undoubtedly justified the narrative surrounding these events.

In a statement released late Thursday, Bolton said, “I am now the latest target in weaponizing the Justice Department to charge those [Trump] deems to be his enemies with charges that were previously declined or distort the facts.
