Willie Colón, the trombonist and orchestra leader behind hits like El Malo, Oh, Qué Será, Talento de Televisión and Gitana died at the age of 75, according to US media. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter died peacefully on Saturday morning “surrounded by his loving family,” according to his family’s social media post. No cause of death was given. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the timeless gift of his music and the treasured memories he made, which will live on forever,” they wrote.

Billboard magazine designated the Puerto Rican performer, who sung in Spanish and had a nearly 60-year career, as one of the most important Latino artists of all time. Colón’s death on Saturday was ascribed by US media to a Facebook statement shared by his family and a tribute written by his long-time manager, Pietro Carlos.

Colón, an arranger and producer, addressed “the competing associations that Puerto Ricans have with their home and with the United States,” according to a biography provided on the Los Angeles Philharmonic website. He utilises his songs to represent and analyse the issues of living in the United States as a Puerto Rican, as well as to suggest the cultural contributions that Puerto Ricans have to offer.
