Senate GOP leaders are once again rearranging their approach to find new methods to persuade Democrats to pass a vote that would continue paying “essential” workers, aiming to break the three-week impasse over government funding.
However, it is anticipated that Democrats will overwhelmingly reject the bill, preventing Congress from taking any further action to end the second-longest government shutdown in history.
A plan to mandate the government to pay employees deemed necessary to work during a shutdown, such as those in the US military, border patrol, and Transportation Security Administration, from Treasury Department funds, will be put to a vote in the Senate on Thursday.
Democrats, meanwhile, said they will introduce a countermeasure on Thursday to guarantee that furloughed workers also receive compensation, stating that they oppose any bill that fails to pay all federal employees. It’s uncertain if the measure would be put to a vote, but even if it were, it wouldn’t pass because 60 votes are required. Likely, the GOP’s measure won’t receive 60 votes either.
