In late January, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a joint letter from five Arab foreign ministers and a top Palestinian official criticising President Donald Trump’s proposal to force Palestinians out of Gaza.
Hussein al-Sheikh, the Palestinian presidential adviser, and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Egypt signed the letter, which was sent on Monday. The top diplomats gathered in Cairo over the weekend, according to Axios, which broke the story first.
On January 25, Trump first suggested that Jordan and Egypt take in Palestinians from Gaza. When questioned about whether he was advocating for a short-term or long-term solution, the president responded, “Could be either.
Critics characterised the U.S. president’s remarks as a call for ethnic cleansing, echoing long-standing Palestinian fears of being forced from their homes forever. Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab countries rejected the plan.
“The people of Gaza should be directly engaged and involved in the reconstruction process. “Palestinians will occupy their land and contribute to its reconstruction,” the letter stated. They must take charge of the process with the international community’s help, so they shouldn’t be deprived of their agency during reconstruction.
