The FBI has revealed that an Iran-affiliated gang hacked Director Kash Patel’s personal email account. Patel’s alleged resume and pictures were posted on the Handala Hack Team’s website on Friday, along with a statement that reads, “This is just our beginning.”
According to the FBI, “malicious actors” were targeting Patel’s email address. “The information in question is historical in nature and involves no government information. For information that aids in identifying Handala group members, the CIA is giving up to $10 million (£7.5 million).
In 2024, just weeks before Patel was named head of the FBI, it was rumored that hackers with Iranian support had compromised his personal correspondence. It’s unclear whether that violation differed from the one the Handala group reported on Friday.
The group’s emblem has been put as a watermark to images that Handala claims to have obtained from Patel’s email account and are making the rounds on social media. In the pictures, Patel can be seen smoking and sniffing cigars, standing next to a vintage vehicle, grinning next to a jet, taking a selfie next to a bottle of whiskey, and posing in what appear to be hotels and restaurants.
