An expensive buy, a bag from a luxury European fashion brand like Hermès, Louis Vuitton, or Prada may cost hundreds of thousands of euros. TikTokers posing as Chinese manufacturers assert that they are the ones who actually create the items of luxury labels, despite the fact that many premium European companies guarantee that their products are made in Europe, which many consumers view as a quality guarantee.
What is actually happening, then, and are high-end fashion labels purposefully hiding the truth? Under the trending hashtag #chinesemanufacturer, tens of thousands of TikToks have been uploaded by Chinese content makers who identify factories they say actually produce goods for premium companies. A TikToker named Wang Seng, who represents a Chinese handbag business, seems to be the trend-setter for these films.
Seng asserted in a video that received over six million views before being removed and then uploaded by other accounts that “80% of luxury bags in the world are made in China.” Seng said that “luxury brands take the almost finished bags back to their own country to do repackaging and logo installing.” Seng claims that this technique is what gives the impression that “the bags appear as’made in Italy’ or’made in France’, you know those’sophisticated’ European countries.”
