Just keeping things together, as French President Macron Emmanuel Macron did at the White House on Monday, is an accomplishment given the undeniable crisis in US-European relations.
He accomplished this by complimenting, praising, and gently urging the US president during a joint news conference and question-and-answer session in the Oval Office. Many leaders worldwide now view this strategy as more effective than criticising Trump or simply speaking out loud. Without giving in or disclosing too much, Macron was able to steer clear of what might have been a difficult day in Washington.
In addition to gently correcting one of Trump’s assertions over Europe’s backing for Ukraine, he acknowledged that both nations want peace and that Europe needed to assume greater responsibility for its own security. Macron conceded, however, that Trump was correct in re-establishing a connection with Vladimir Putin of Russia.
This stands in stark contrast to the current perspective in Berlin, Paris, and London, which have all adopted policies of imposing sanctions on Russian persons and businesses and isolating Putin. Macron stated that the new administration marked “a big change” and that President Trump had excellent cause to resume his relationship with President Putin.
