According to a statement posted on Instagram on Monday, the renowned Mexican singer-songwriter Paquita la del Barrio passed away at the age of 77. The statement wished for space so that her family may “live their grief in privacy,” adding, “Rest in peace, your music and legacy will always live in our hearts.
Francisca Viveros Barradas, the artist’s real name, was born in 1947 in Veracruz, a state in eastern Mexico. Her most well-known songs featured lyrics that ruthlessly criticised males in failed romantic relationships and gave women more power. Taking aim at masculine chauvinism, some of her most well-known songs are “Rata de Dos Patas” (Two-Legged Rat) and “Tres Veces te Engañé” (Three Times I Cheated on You).
She has had three Grammy nominations, and in 2021, the Billboard Latin Music Awards presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. CNN has reached out to the management firm of Paquita la del Barrio.
