German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called US President Donald Trump’s intentions for the war-torn Palestinian region of Gaza “a scandal” on Sunday. Trump’s Tuesday suggestion that Washington should seize control of the Gaza Strip, expel its residents, and transform it into “the Riviera of the Middle East” provoked outcry around the world.
Merz clarified, however, that Trump’s declaration is “part of a whole series of proposals coming from the American government” We must wait to find out what is truly intended and how it will be carried out. There is most likely a great deal of rhetoric at play.
Following the October 7, 2023, attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas that sparked the conflict, Israel launched a catastrophic military offensive against the group in Gaza.
The Gaza Strip is a small coastal region on the eastern Mediterranean that has been devastated by that battle. However, a ceasefire that has been in place since last month has stopped the deadly fighting and allowed for the release of captives that Hamas had taken.
