Since several months ago, the cost of eggs has been gradually increasing, and as poultry farms across the nation battle with a bird flu outbreak, the cost of your omelet may increase much further.
According to the most recent Consumer Price Index, the average cost of a dozen big Grade A eggs increased to $3 in February from about $2 in the fall. Egg prices are at their highest point since April 2023, despite falling from a record $4.82 in January 2023—following a massive avian flu outbreak that devastated farms the year before.
The largest egg producer in the United States, Cal-Maine Foods, announced earlier this week that it had killed over 1.6 million hens and 337,000 young chickens at one of its Texas plants after some of the animals tested positive for a “highly virulent avian influenza.” Egg-Land’s Best, Sunny Meadow, Farmhouse Eggs, Sunups, and Land O’ Lakes are just a few of the brands that the company produces.
The business declared that “production at the facility has temporarily ceased.” “The extent of potential future outbreaks, with heightened risk during the migration seasons, cannot be predicted. [The virus] is still present in the wild bird population.”
